3D PRINTING

FARMINGTON AREA PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT

 3D PRINTER POLICY

Purpose

The Farmington Area Public Library’s 3D printers are available for use by Farmington Area Public Library District cardholders, in good standing, in order to foster creativity, learning, and to support STEAM education in our community.

3D Printing Requirements

1.      3D print requests must be submitted via the form on the library’s website and completed in full.

2.      All files must be in .STL format.

3.      The print object dimensions must be smaller than 8in. x 8in. x 8in. (8 inches is equal to 203 millimeters.) Library staff reserve the right to resize projects to maximize print results, unless dimensions are specific in the request.

4.      Objects may only be made with library-provided material. All prints are printed with a single-color filament. Color preferences may be submitted, but the library reserves the right to choose a different color of filament based on availability.

5.      The 3D printers may be used for lawful purposes only. The public will not be permitted to use the library’s 3D printers to create objects that are

  •  Prohibited by state or federal law.
  •  Subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.
  • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others; for example, guns, knives, or other possible lethal weapons.
  • Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment.
  • Intended for sale or mass production.

6.      The FAPLD staff reserve the right to refuse any 3D print job. Size of the file, timing of printing, and maximum length of time allowed for each print job will be regulated according to demand and equipment restrictions. The library reserves the right to limit the number of print requests. Abuse of the 3D print service may lead to denial of future use.

7.      Printing requests will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. While staff will attempt to expedite all requests, the library cannot guarantee request turn-around time or when an object will be finished. Priority printing will be given to library programs and events.

Acknowledgment By Patrons

1.      By submitting content or objects, the patron agrees to assume all responsibility for, and shall not hold the library responsible, in all matters related to patented, trademarked, or copyrighted materials.

2.      FAPLD staff will do their best to ensure a successful completed print, however, the library is not responsible for failed 3D prints. The library is not responsible for the removal of extra support material and any finishing (sanding or painting) on the final print.

3.      The cost of a 3D print is determined on a print-by-print basis, which is charged at the rate of 10¢ per gram with a $1.00 print fee. Requests cannot be retracted once the production process has begun. Payment is due in full at the time of pickup.

4.      Items must be picked up by the individual who printed them. Printed items that are not picked up within 14 days of notification of completed print, will become the property of the library.

5.      The Farmington Area Public Library District is not responsible for any damage, loss, or security of data arising from the use of its computers or network, nor for the functionality or quality of content produced on the 3D printer.
